The largest online e-shop in Czechia and Slovakia

Alza’s story began in 1994 as Alzasoft, and their first Prague store opened in 1998. The company started to focus on e-commerce in 2000 and opened its first Slovak branch in 2004.

Major changes arrived in 2006 when Alzasoft went through a rebranding process and became Alza as we know it today. Two years later, Alza created a well-known mascot – a green alien called Alzák, who has served as the star of their advertisements since then. Since 2014, Alza expanded to other European countries and launched new sites in Germany, Austria, and Hungary.

Over the years, Alza focused on expanding its product selection to include more useful items besides electronics, such as household items, electric cars, toys, sports equipment, office supplies, a selection of groceries, a Marketplace, and more.

Furthermore, they started including various useful services, such as new payment options, convenient delivery options via Alzaboxes available in strategic locations, premium services for business owners, and more. Alza was the driving force of innovation for the Slovak and Czech e-commerce industries. According to Similarweb data, Alza is the #1 e-commerce website in Czechia and Slovakia, scored #2 in Hungary, and ranked #10 in Austria.

With the huge selection of products available at Alza, the company needed a convenient and efficient way for customers to search for new products and discover new ones in the vast selection. At first, they started working on their own solution.

Alza’s approach to finding the right search solution

Alza developed its own product search & discovery solution. However, while it worked well, they quickly realized that further internal development and updates would prove to be costly and time-consuming. That’s when they started searching for a third-party solution for their needs. Alza considered multiple solutions, but in the end, the company selected Luigi’s Box. The company saw Luigi’s Box Search, Analytics, and Personalization features as key functionalities of our set of products.

Improving key areas of Alza’s website

While Alza was already a successful company and the top player in their respective markets, they still needed to solve certain issues with product search & discovery to improve their e-commerce even further.

Outsourcing their product search & discovery

Alza realized that developing and maintaining their own search engine and product discovery functionality would prove to be a challenge that might take a long time to overcome. From the technological perspective, Luigi’s Box is easily scalable, and since Alza experiences peaks in traffic during important periods, such as Christmas and Black Friday, Luigi’s Box can manage these changes in traffic without any struggle. With the huge selection of products from various product categories, Alza required a solution that would create a convenient shopping experience, regardless of what type of product the customers are searching for on the website. This means that the search engine they were looking for knew how to handle typos, zero page results, and more to ensure the process was quick, efficient, and easy for every type of user.

Furthermore, the e-shop would benefit greatly from personalization features and automated product ranking. Before Luigi’s Box, they had to deal with query redirects and other tasks manually.

Luigi’s Box was selected from multiple product search & discovery solutions on the market, and after we got into the final selection round, we made a comparison of our solutions with their own. The first A/B tests were launched in 2021 on the German, Austrian, and Hungarian websites, while the second round of tests took place in 2022 on the Czech and Slovak websites. Luigi’s Box surpassed Alza’s in-house search & discovery solution in multiple aspects. Luigi’s Box went live in 2022 on all five websites. Our experts put a lot of time and effort into Luigi’s Box configuration to ensure the best possible results.

Luigi’s Box has managed to improve the accuracy of search results on Alza websites significantly. Thanks to features such as typo correction, word lemmatization, natural language processing, and others, our Search was able to reduce search times and provide much more accurate search results for each customer.

Alza’s websites are able to run reliably and maintain a great search experience thanks to this ability. Luigi’s Box is ready to scale up even further in case Alza’s marketplace grows significantly.

Alza experienced an increase in conversions from search and higher search usage after implementing Luigi’s Box. The number of no-results pages during searches and search exit rates decreased as well.
